VW Taos vs. VW Tiguan: Which Crossover is the Best Fit for State College Drivers?

If you want an SUV that's fun to drive and gets good gas mileage, get a Volkswagen. Two of our top crossovers - the VW Taos and the VW Tiguan - also have generous cargo space and a wide array of useful tech features. To help you choose between these two models, Ciocca Volkswagen of State College has prepared the following comparison.

Interior

Passenger Space

The new Volkswagen Tiguan is available with two or three rows of seats. Two-row models hold five passengers, but families in State College will enjoy seating for seven in three-row versions. Front-seat passengers in the Tiguan are treated to 40.2 inches of legroom. There is also 36.5 inches of legroom in the second row, and 27.9 inches in the third row.

The new Volkswagen Taos is strictly a two-row SUV that seats five passengers. However, it has about the same or more space to stretch out, with 40.1 inches of front legroom and 37.9 inches of rear legroom.

Cargo Space

Cargo space varies by seating configuration in the new VW Tiguan. Three-row models offer up to 65.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Huntingdon drivers who pack a lot of suitcases for trips will appreciate that the two-row Tiguan has up to 73.4 cubic feet of cargo space.

The new Volkswagen Taos has up to 27.9 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats and 65.9 cubic feet of cargo space with those seats folded down.

Cabin Materials

The new Volkswagen Tiguan has a handsome, understated interior that's awash in soft-touch materials. Cloth upholstery comes standard, but synthetic or genuine leather seats are available.

The new VW Taos has a well-organized cabin with attractive styling, but it has more hard-plastic trim pieces than the Tiguan. The Taos also comes with cloth seats and offers simulated or authentic leather options.

Technology

Safety

You'll feel safe on the road in Bellefonte with the new Volkswagen Tiguan. It comes standard with six driver assistance features, including forward collision mitigation, which warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes if necessary.

The new VW Taos comes standard with five advanced active safety features.

Infotainment Systems

A well-equipped infotainment system can make running errands in Lewistown, PA more enjoyable. The new VW Tiguan's MIB infotainment system comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability. An optional 8-inch touchscreen system comes with navigation and wireless device charging.

The new Volkswagen Taos also comes with the MIB infotainment system and a 6.5-inch touchscreen. An 8-inch touchscreen with a wireless device charging pad and navigation is available. The Tao's system is simpler to operate because it has more physical controls than the Tiguan's system, which relies heavily on touch-sensitive buttons.

Performance

Engine/Acceleration

If you want to be able to merge quickly onto Pennsylvania Route 829 in Huntingdon, you need an SUV with some get-up-and-go. The new VW Tiguan comes with a turbocharged 184-horsepower four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission that give it plenty of zip. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but 4Motion all-wheel-drive is available. When properly equipped, the Tiguan can bolt from 0 to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds.

The new Volkswagen Taos comes standard with a turbocharged 158-horsepower four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Like with the Tiguan, front-wheel drive is standard and 4Motion all-wheel-drive is optional. With its quickest configuration, the Taos can go from 0 to 60 mph in 9.4 seconds.

Ride, Handling, and Maneuverability

The new VW Tiguan has precise steering and reassuring brakes that make it pleasant to drive on winding roads in Bellefonte. Its independent suspension smooths out most bumps in the street for a silky ride.

The new Volkswagen Taos also rides gently on its front strut and torsion-beam rear suspension. However, you may notice some light body roll around turns. Since the Taos has a smaller turning radius than the Tiguan, it's easier to maneuver through narrow spaces.

Fuel Economy

Gas prices are high enough that Lewistown drivers want to make as few stops at the fuel pump as possible. The new Volkswagen Tiguan returns up to 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway in front-wheel drive models.

The new VW Taos is even more efficient, earning 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway when properly equipped.

Towing Capacity

If you frequently pull small boats to Tyrone Reservoir, you'll prefer the new VW Tiguan. With the right configuration, it can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

The new Volkswagen Taos has a 1,000-pound maximum towing capacity.
